What is a Movie Color Wheel?
A Movie Color Wheel is a visually interesting way to explore the color palette of an entire film or TV show episode.
Every circle you see in the wheel represents a single frame, smoothed out to show its average color. The largest, outermost circle is the first frame. And the smallest, innermost circle is the final one.
The result of all these circles put together is a concentric circle that beautifully captures the colors of the film from start to finish.

How Do Movie Color Wheels Work?
To create a Movie Color Wheel, 300 frames are extracted at evenly spaced intervals throughout the film. Each frame is then smoothed out to its average color and transformed into a circle.
These circles are arranged from the outer edge inward—starting with the first frame on the outer edge and ending with the final frame at the center.
The final product is a series of 300 circles, nested within one another, giving a visual overview of the movie’s color palette.
On our website, you can also swipe across to see an inverted version of the Movie Color Wheel. In this version, the order is flipped, with the first frame at the center and the final frame on the outside. This gives you an alternative perspective on the film’s color palette.

What’s the Point?
It’s just cool. The Movie Color Wheel is another creative way to explore the visual storytelling of films and TV shows. Like a Movie Barcode, it condenses the movie’s visual essence into a single image, but in a completely different form. The concentric circles make it easy to see how colors are used throughout the film, offering insights into the mood, tone, and pacing.
Whether you’re a film lover, designer, or just someone who appreciates unique art, a Movie Color Wheel lets you experience your favorite movies in a whole new way. It’s both a beautiful piece of art and a fascinating exploration of how films utilize color.
